Which tool do you need right now?
The contrast checker and the scanner answer different questions. The contrast checker settles a single design decision in seconds — one color pair, one result. The scanner tells you where your website stands as a whole, and takes about a minute to do it. The EAA/BFSG checklist, in turn, walks you through the whole project — from applicability to the accessibility statement.
Contrast checker — for a single color question
- You are picking colors and want to know whether the combination reaches 4.5:1.
- A report flagged a contrast error and you need a replacement value that passes.
- You maintain a design system and only want to ship pairs that already passed as tokens.
Website scanner — for the overall picture
- You don't know where your website stands and need a baseline first.
- You want a list of concrete findings you can hand over to your developers.
- You want to know what stands between you and a defensible accessibility statement.
If you can't decide, start with the scan. It shows whether contrast is your most pressing problem at all — or whether missing alt text, unlabelled form fields and a broken heading structure come first.
What these tools do not do
Automated testing covers the machine-testable criteria — the largest and fastest part of the work. That does not make it complete, and no vendor can honestly claim otherwise. We would rather you knew up front where the line runs.
Keyboard operation
Whether every function can be reached without a mouse, and whether focus follows a sensible order, is something a person has to tab through.
Screen reader logic
Alt text can be technically present and still useless. No script can judge whether a description really replaces the image.
Comprehensibility
Meaningful link text, clear error messages, forms people can actually follow: editorial judgements, not measurable values.
Contrast over images
The checker works with two fixed colors. When text sits on a photo or a gradient, you have to find the worst spot yourself.
That is why the report marks uncertain findings as “check manually” instead of quietly counting them as passed. A good score is a solid starting point — it is not proof of conformance.
What happens to what you type in
The contrast checker runs entirely in your browser. The WCAG formula needs nothing but the two hex values, so there is no server that could ever see them. Your colors never leave your device — not even the ones from a redesign nobody is meant to see yet.
Both values do appear in the address bar so you can pass a result on as a link. If you would rather not, copy the summary with the button instead of the URL. The website scan necessarily works differently: it needs your page address and an email address to send the report to.

This collection keeps growing. The tools worth building, in our view, are the ones that answer a single question conclusively instead of promising yet another half-complete audit. We won't name dates — whatever is finished shows up here.
